Happy New Year Blog

Hello Canadensis…

As I sit here with just a few days remaining in 2014, I want to first wish everyone in the Camp Canadensis Family a very happy and healthy new year!  This is the time when we tend to both look back at the year gone by and look forward to exciting things ahead.  At Camp Canadensis, 2014 was a truly stellar year for all of us.  When I remember the past summer, I think about how 2014 saw our largest group of CITs ever assembled at camp…50 CITs!  In honor of them, for the first time in the history of camping, our Color War break included their parents to start the annual event.  Since Summer ended, I have probably watched that video a handful of times and it still gives me goosebumps when I view it!  That moment of this summer’s break will stick with me forever.  Of course, there were so many other great memories, too, from a Revolutionary War Day which featured three teams (Red, White and Blue) for the very first time, great Spirit Days like wearing your PJs All Day, the water and shaving cream fight, the MTV Night Finals and the introduction of Snack Chats to camp are just a few of the many that come to mind.  Of course, we will do our best to top it all in 2015.  We have heard so many great and wonderful ideas from campers and staff and plans are already underway in putting our Summer calendar together.

This time of year is also when we think about New Year’s resolutions.  Anyone have anything that they would like to accomplish in the upcoming 365 days?!  One thing I’ve been thinking about is trying to blog more.  I really enjoy reaching out to everyone in camp cyber-land and have some ideas for some new twists to our blogs.  I’d also like to reach out to any camper or staff member or even parent that would like to Guest Blog on our site.  If interested, please e-mail me at brian@canadensis.com.

In addition to all of the great planning going on at camp, a few weeks ago I got the chance to get away to a place I had been wanting to go for years.  For my birthday this year, my wife Jaime surprised me with a December trip with my buddies to Nashville, TN and to attend the Giants-Titans football game.  We had an amazing time!  Nashville is a really fun city.  Over the course of an extended weekend, we ate a lot of delicious food and barbecue and went to cool places like the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum, Opryland and cruised the Broadway strip of Nashville (we even did a little line dancing with the locals).  I’ll have to show off my new learned moves this summer at Rak Dan!  Here are a few pictures…

Me and my friends at the Giants-Titans game in Nashville. We actually saw a Giants win, which was somewhat rare this season. Ha Ha!

This is what a Southern Breakfast looks like at a place called Monell's. You don't order. They just bring you big plates of food, including eggs, pancakes, biscuits, fried apples, bacon, sausage, country ham, cheesy grits, fried chicken and cinnamon rolls. It was fantastic!

This time of year also brings with it plenty of family holiday traditions.  In our house, one of our favorites is building Gingerbread houses.  Here is how ours came out this year…

As always, I’ve been busy seeing campers this month.  Here’s an update of my trips to seeing camp families…

In Jericho, NY, I met up with 4th grade girl Maya Akiva, who will be joining us at Canadensis for her first summer as a Lower Inter Girl.  This Fall, Maya played on a soccer team, the Jericho Heat.  Now in Winter, she is playing on the Nets in the Jericho Athletic Association Basketball League.  When at home, Maya loves to sing and dance.  Her favorite singer these days is Ariana Grande.  She also enjoys playing Tops Trumps card game as well as taking care of her pet fish and snails.  When she gets to camp in June, she is really looking forward to canteen, all of the activities on the lake and making a whole bunch of new friends.  Here is a picture.

In Merrick, NY, I spent some time getting to know Bradley Rowe, who is currently in the 5th grade.  Bradley loves to play baseball and spends a lot of his time playing third base and catcher on his travel team, the Long Island Force.  Bradley just started his basketball season and is looking forward to a successful season on his team the Cougars.  He also enjoys playing flag football, making up games to play at home and bike riding in the neighborhood.  As an Upper Inter Boy in Summer 2015, Bradley can’t wait to play baseball in the CBL, ride the Hondas / Quads and making new friends.  Here is a photo…

In Lower Gwynned, PA, I hung out with Madi Schwartz, who will be an Upper Junior in 2015 as she is currently in the 3rd grade.  Madi loves to dance and she is rehearsing for her big recital in the Spring where she will be performing routines in hip hop, ballet, lyrical and tap.  In March, Madi will also be performing in the production of “Annie”.  In the Fall, Madi was on two soccer teams, the Whitpain Wind and the Green Gators.  When at home, Madi likes to do arts and crafts, listen to music, watch movies and cooking shows on the Food Network.  When camp time rolls around, she is super ready to meet new people and tray all of the activities in the lake and pool.  Here is a pic…

In Lower Gwynned, PA, I also got to see Sydney Salin, who is currently in the 2nd grade.  Sydney takes gymnastics lessons at the Little Gym and she told me that she enjoys the floor exercises and routines the best.  Sydney plays on a soccer team, the Sharks.  She also really enjoys arts and crafts, likes to draw, play cards games like Uno and board games like Monopoly as well as surf the web on You Tube and play video games such as Minecraft.  As a Lower Junior in Summer 2015, Sydney is very excited about the Water Trampoline, Woodworking, the Zipline, Waterskiing and the Water Slides.  Here is a photo…

In Livingston, NJ, I enjoyed meeting 2nd grade boy and 2015 Lower Junior Steven Marlin.  Steven is currently involved taking piano lessons and doing Crossfit training.  He also enjoys this time of year because it means he can go skiing.  When at home, Steven enjoys watching TV shows and movies.  Some of his favorite shows are “How It’s Made” and “Factory Made.”  These days, his favorite movie is “Spaceballs.”  When I asked Steven what he is looking forward to in his first summer at camp, Steven gave me a whole bunch of activities, including Tennis, Mountain Biking, Sailing, Ice Mountain, Pottery, all the Lake Activities, Woodworking, Rocketry, Canteen and Horseback Riding.  Here is a pic…

On a final blog note, a lot of times, I always get the question from jealous parents who ask, “Can the parents come to camp?”  Traditionally, their kids always tell them, “No!  Camp is for us!”  Ha Ha!  Well, that didn’t stop Craig and Danielle Nurick, whose daughters attend Canadensis (much to their jealousy), from getting in on the camp spirit.  In fact, back in October, they let me know that they dressed up for Halloween 2014 as this past year’s Color War teams.  Here is a great photo they sent me…

Danielle Nurick was Varsity Blue and Craig Nurick was Honor Roll Gold for Halloween this year! Love when parents get in on the camp spirit!

Well, that’s all of the blogging for 2014!  Can’t wait to see everyone in the New Year!  HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

Have a great day!

Elias is joining his older brother at Canadensis, Griffin is a current 6th grader, and will be a Freshman Boy this summer!

Here’s a photo of me with Elias and both his brothers.  It was awesome catching up with Griffin during the home visit and hearing all about what he’s been doing since camp.  He’s a current 6th grader, and will be moving up to Freshman Hill this summer.  Here’s a few updates from Griff:

Things like double electives, getting to opt out of the overnight, choosing cooking as an elective, and going on the overnight trip to Cooperstown.  (Even though he’s going to go twice in the same summer since he has a baseball tournament there!).
Gigantic Cookies!

Check out that gigantic cookie!  Having fun with the Plant Family!

I love seeing our campers!  A few weeks ago, I got to hang out with Jordan, a current 6th grader who will be a Freshman Girl at camp this summer, and will be getting her 5 year jacket!  She was in town visiting several camp friends, and I got to spend some time with her and her parents!

Jordan (left) was visiting friends in Philadelphia, and I met up with her and Rachel (middle) right before Rachel went to Nutcracker practice!

One of her sleepovers was with her bunkmate Rachel, and we all got to spend a little time together in Philadelphia before Rachel went to ballet practice.  But, not just any ballet practice…Rachel had to practice with the Pennsylvania Ballet for the production of the Nutcracker, where she was starring as Marie…the lead!  It such a dream come true, and a major role!  It takes tons of practice and rehearsal, plus dedication.  She has a lot of performances to do at the Academy of Music, which seats more than 2,500 people!

At the show with Jordan and Jordyn

At the show with Jordan and Jordyn

A few weeks later, the curtain went up on The Nutcracker, and I went with some of Rachel’s camp friends to support her!  Here I am with Jordan, and Jordyn (who is also going to be a Freshman Girl this summer, but is in a different bunk in the division).  We were all SO impressed. Rachel was incredible on stage – just phenomenal!!!   All her hard work is paying off, and if you are in Philly this holiday season, it’s not too late to get tickets to see her on stage!

We love seeing holiday cards from our camp families!

We love seeing holiday cards from our camp families!

We love when our camp families include us on the mailing list, and send us their holiday cards.  We get so excited to open the envelopes and pass them around so everyone can see!  We also love when we spot camp photos or camp gear that makes it onto the holiday card, but this year was the first time we were a “trivia” answer on a holiday card!  This super creative personalized family word search comes from Aidan (Lower Inter Boy) and Brooke (Freshman Girl) and their fun loving family!  The question for 11 Across said: “Brooke and Aidan go to this overnight camp”, and the answer of course is CANADENSIS!

And since this will be my last blog of 2014, I wanted to share one last thing I’m very excited about!  Amy Spielberger has been a Canadensis Mom for several years, her children Ruby and Drew will both be back at camp this summer.  This year mom is coming with them, and joining us on the Programming Team at camp!  She’s grown up at sleepaway camp, met her husband at camp, and has served as a JCC Day Camp Director.  Her hard working and detail oriented approach to camp will be a huge asset to our program this year.  Our Program Director Lauren Schwed and I can’t wait to have her on our team!

Thankful Blog

Hello Canadensis!

It’s been quite some time since my last blog, but when I got to my desk this morning, I made sure I was committed to reaching all of you in our Camp Cyberworld!  I hope this blog finds everyone in a festive and holiday spirit as December rolls upon us.  I hope all of our camp families and staff had a very Happy Thanksgiving.  Here in the Krug household, we have a lot to be thankful for this year with the arrival of our daughter Emerson, who was so excited to meet everyone during the November Canteen on the Fly events.  Me, Jaime and Emmy continued our family tradition of watching the Macy’s Parade in bed all morning.  That was followed by gorging our faces all afternoon with a magnificent feast prepared by my mom, who has been hosting the event for close to 38 years now!  Thanks mom for another memorable meal.

Speaking of being thankful, I got such a wonderful e-mail sent to me last week from 2015 Upper Inter Boy Daniel Gold.  For a school project, Daniel had to write an essay, expressing what he is thankful for this year.  I think the second to last line sums it up pretty nicely…

Gold

For our Winter office, we really enjoyed getting out on the road once again for our Annual Canteen on the Fly Events in Pennsylvania, Long Island, Westchester and Northern New Jersey.  In total, we got to see more than 200 campers and staff.  Special thanks to all of our staff, including Melissa Torban, Robin Forti, Heather Fisher, Dave Malter, Dani Corradetti, Brandon Herder, Brooke O’Donnell, Matt “Chipper” Jacobson, Britt Dvorscak, Sam Ginsburg, Allie Ernst, Lauren Gadol, Brett Levine, Matt Siegel, Elizabeth Menkowitz, Jordan Rosen, Ben Portnoy, Hannah Schepps and Lauren Grama, who took the time to meet us at one of the locations.  Go to our Facebook Page to check out photos from all of these locations.

The Canadensis Camp Spirit was also in full effect on November 18, which was wear your Camp Shirt Day.  If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram pages to see all of the campers and staff that participated.  Me and Emerson got in on the action, too!

The Winter Office is getting busier and busier by the day.  Eric and Matt are hard at work with several projects that are taking place up at camp.  One of them involves a major renovation to our Rec Hall.  In fact, the building, which is one camp’s more historic facilities, has a whole new complexion as it will now feature a new outdoor stage.  This will allow for our Theater Program to conduct rehearsals outdoors as well as be an amazing new venue for some evening activities.  The stage will feature lighting and a sound system, too!  Here is your first look at the work in progress…

RecHall

Camp’s Rec Hall will now have a new outdoor stage! Here is your first look at this project that is still “in the works.”

Pam and Cara are busy with the hundreds of staff applications that have started to pour in.  We are also in the process of finalizing our staff recrutiment trips for Winter / Spring 2015, which puts all of us (me, Eric, Pam, Cara and Matt) at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States and overseas in places like Australia, England and Eastern Europe.  Meeting prospective staff in person is still the way we like to do things at Canadensis.  At the same time, we have heard back from so many staff that are interested in returning for another summer.  Of course, if you know of anyone that might make for a great Mature Goofball (in our opinion, the perfect definition of a Canadensis staff member), please direct them to our Staff Application here.

Next week, our Winter Office will be assembling the Mystery Boxes that we once again made available to everyone again this year for the Holiday Season, with all of the proceeds going to our Canadensis Cares! Program.  Canadensis Cares! is a scholarship program designed to benefit Canadensis campers whose families are impacted by adverse or unusual circumstances. In some small way, every member of the Canadensis community can help families facing circumstances less fortunate than their own.  There are still a few left, so if you haven’t ordered one yet, what are you waiting for?!  Fill out the order form at www.canadensis.com or call us at 484.674.1941 today!  It is for a great cause and any recipient of the box will be happy to receive the totally cool Canadensis swag that’s in it!

Mystery-Box-Few-Left-20141

Of course, there is our Annual Camp Reunion on Sunday, January 25 to look forward to as well.  We hope that many of our campers and staff that were with us in Summer 2014 are able to attend.  Just recently, we announced our New Camper Event for Summer 2015.  This event is for campers that are currently in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade and an opportunity for children to meet others that will be at camp this year.  The event will be held on Sunday, April 19 at the Edison Hotel.  Specific times for age groups will be announced soon.

As always, my calendar is starting to book with some visits to camp families.  Here are some that I have done over the past several weeks…

In Woodbury, NY, I spent time with twins Hailey and Jesse Mair, who are currently in the 3rd grade and will be joining our Upper Junior division in 2015.  Hailey told me that she will be performing in a production of “Peter Pan” soon.  On top of that, she takes art classes at a place called Village Artist, plays the violin and likes Gaga.  When at home, she enjoys watching the new show “Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Don” on the Nick Channel.  This summer at camp, she is looking forward to Archery, the Canadensis Today Show, Lacrosse and all the delicious items on our salad bar.  Jesse let me know that he currently takes Tae Kwon Do lessons.  The instrument that he is learning is the viola.  Jesse also takes art lessons at Village Artist.  On top of that, he also plays lacrosse.  Finally, Jesse is a big Lego builder and he showed me his impressive pieces.  At camp, Jesse can’t wait for Archery, Lacrosse, Windsurfing and the Canadensis Today Show.  Here is a pic…

Mair

Me with the Mair twins, Jesse and Hailey. Both will be Upper Juniors in 2015.

In Upper Saddle River, NJ, I hung out with the Weisensels, where Adam (currently in the 3rd grade) and Rachel (currently in 2nd grade) will be joining us at Canadensis for their first summer in 2015.  Adam likes to play baseball and just recently finished up his Fall Ball season on his team, the Cardinals, where he plays catcher, third base and outfield.  He will also play baseball again in the Spring.  Adam plays tackle football as well and is a guard, linebacker and defensive end on his team the Bulldogs.  In the Winter, he likes to ski.  In addition to all of that, he is involved in karate and plays Minecraft.  This summer as an Upper Junior, he is truly excited for the Canadensis Baseball League and Color War.  Rachel plays soccer on her travel team, the Americans, where she likes when she is put at the striker position.  Rachel is also heavily involved in a competitive gymnastics and she is looking forward to the season, which begins in January.  Rachel is also a big fan of wintertime skiing.  When at home, she likes video games and Facetiming with friends and family as well as coloring.  At camp, when she is a Lower Junior, she is ready for soccer and Color War.  Here is a photo…

Weisensel

Me with Lower Junior Rachel Weisensel and Upper Junior Adam Weisensel.

In Livingston, NJ, I got to know Josh, who will be part of our Upper Inter divsion in 2015 as he is a current 5th grader.  Josh plays forward and midfield on a travel soccer team, the Livingston Levelers.  This Winter, he will also be playing in a basketball league.  Then, in the Spring, he will play in a baseball league.  Josh is a big sports fan, too, and roots for the Yankees, Knicks, Giants and Red Bulls.  When he’s hanging out at home, he plays video games like Madden Football and NBA 2K.  When camp time comes, Josh is all about trying things like Hondas, Woodworking, Soccer, Baseball and all of the activities at the lake.  Here is a picture…

In Lafayette Hill, PA, I got to see Max and Alexa Baer.  Alexa is back for her third summer at camp and will be in our Upper Inter division while Max joins us for his first year as part of our Upper Junior division.  Currently in 5th grade, Alexa is very involved with her dance classes that ranges from hip hop to tap to jazz to lyrical to ballet.  She is practicing towards her annual big recital in the Spring.  Alexa wanted to give a shout out to all of the girls from Summer 2014’s Bunk 7 and had a secret message for them.  She wanted to tell them that, “She hopes the moth doesn’t grab your eyeball.”  Alexa is most definitely looking forward to the camp reunion in January as well as MTV Night in Summer 2015.  As for Max, who is currently in the 3rd grade, he plays halfback and goalie on his travel soccer team, the Colonial Clash.  Now that Winter is upon us, he is just starting his basketball league as well.  In the spring, Max will play travel baseball.  When at home, Max enjoys playing ping pong and playing NBA 2K12 on the Wii.  This summer, Max can’t wait to try the quads and is very excited about Color War.  Here is a photo…

Best Halloween costume goes to Jack McMillan, who designed and built his own. Jack turned himself into a Go Pro Camera. Nice work, Jack!

Well, that’s all the blogging for now.  More to come soon.  And, I promise that my next blog won’t wait until January.

Have a great day!
